Key Highlights
Contactless payments are increasingly being integrated across the public transport system. In December 2025, Western Australia launched tap and go payments across public transport, enabling fares to be paid by tapping contactless bank cards or mobile wallets on validators. The system calculates and charges the applicable fare through the card payment network rather than requiring a dedicated transit card for each trip. By integrating with existing payment rails, it aims to simplify onboarding for occasional users and reduce the need for cash or ticket purchases at stations. Earlier, in September 2025, public transport service Orange Buslines, in collaboration with Transport for NSW, launched a contactless payment option on Orange Buslines’ regular-route services buses. The system allows passengers to pay fares by tapping a contactless-enabled debit or credit card or a compatible mobile wallet on the onboard reader when boarding.
The payment acceptance infrastructure in Australia is poised for further expansion. Payment companies are launching cost-effective solutions to encourage merchant adoption. In July 2025, Square launched its Square Handheld payment solution, which is designed to accept both chip and PIN, as well as contactless payments. Likewise, in August 2024, the Australian fintech company Zeller introduced Zeller Terminal 2, an all-in-one payment acceptance solution that accepts chip cards, contactless cards, and mobile wallets.
Australia has a well-developed instant payments infrastructure. The NPP offers an addressing service, PayID, allowing customers to link personal identifiers, such as a mobile number or email address, to their bank account. In this context, in July 2025, National Australia Bank (NAB) partnered with real-time solutions provider Azupay to launch PayID Receivables in Australia. The service enables businesses to manage incoming payments using unique customer-specific PayIDs linked to the simple personal identifiers. Customers can initiate payments via digital banking channels, with settlement occurring in real time.
