The Austrian construction industry is expected to grow in real terms by 0.9% in 2026, supported by increased investment in transport and energy infrastructure projects. In May 2026, Austria’s state-owned road and rail operators, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Asfinag, announced plans to jointly invest approximately EUR350 million ($405.5 million) in infrastructure projects across the state of Carinthia during 2026–2027, with total planned investment in the region projected to reach EUR1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) by 2031. In addition, around EUR440 million ($509.7 million) will be invested in upgrading the B317 route, a key 70km primary road in Austria that connects Judenburg in Styria with St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia by 2030. Despite the strengthened investment pipeline, the construction activity remains uneven across sectors. According to Statistics Austria, the average construction turnover index declined by 1.8% year-on-year (YoY) during the first five months of 2026, following an annual 1.2% decline in 2025.

Over the remainder of the forecast period, the construction industry is expected to record an average annual growth of 3.1% between 2027 and 2030, driven by public and private investment in renewable energy and institutional infrastructure. According to the Austria 2026 Energy Policy Review published in May 2026 by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the country will require more than EUR68 billion ($78.8 billion) in transmission and distribution infrastructure investment by 2040 to address regional imbalances between expanding solar power generation and electricity demand in the east and hydropower storage capacity in the west. In February 2026, the Austrian government adopted the RTI (Research, Technology and Innovation Pact) Pact 2027–2029, a three-year funding framework to implement the RTI Strategy 2030.
