Austria Renewable Energy- Renewable Energy Expansion Act
In March 2021, the final version of the EAG was introduced by the government. The EAG is aimed at reshaping the Austrian legal framework on renewable energy generation, distribution, and consumption. Earlier renewable energy produced and not consumed by the producer was purchased by the Green Electricity Settlement Agency – OeMAG Abwicklungsstelle für Ökostrom (OeMAG) also known as Ökostromabwicklungsstelle. It was delivered to the grid where in return OeMAG pays a fixed-fee tariff to the producers. However, under this new act, the large producers of renewable energy will be subject to a self-marketing principle under which they can act independently in the market and exploit all opportunities in new market segments.
The act will provide the legal framework for energy communities and allow them to work together to generate and supply renewable energy. This framework will help consumers, small renewable energy producers, small companies, and local authorities to generate, store, sell, and supply renewable electricity even across property borders.

Austria Renewable Energy Policy Outlook
The key policy supporting renewable power generation is the Green Electricity Act, also known as Okostromgesetz, which was introduced in 2003. It resulted in the increased deployment of wind energy, biomass, and biogas facilities. However, due to budget restrictions, and reduced guaranteed duration of support, the construction of renewable projects decreased significantly. To address this issue, the government amended the act in 2009, bringing longer support periods, revised and increased tariffs, and an increase in the overall budget. These amendments, coupled with a reduction in the cost of renewable technologies, stimulated new capacity additions. This was addressed by further amendments to the act in 2012 & latest in 2017.
