Automotive Seating Market and Trend Analysis by Technology, Key Companies and Forecast, 2021-2036

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the global light vehicle seating sector, major suppliers, top 14 markets, technology trends and market size forecasts.

What are the market dynamics of the global automotive seating market?

Seats are becoming lighter by as much as 50%. This has been achieved through novel designs using new materials, foams and assembly mechanisms. Yet customer perception of the car’s interior is paramount. While thinner seats will add crucial space inside smaller cars, the ability to transform the cabin to suit different needs remains a hot topic in the sport utility and minivans segments. As consumers demand more flexibility from their vehicles, suppliers must find yet more novel ways to collapse the rear seat rows.

Most work is focused on folding seats into the floor and roof. OEMs are demanding greater differentiation in their seat designs, customers want more luxury such as cooling and heating, and ergonomists are understanding more and more about what the human frame needs in order to be comfortable. Aside from seating ergonomics, a great deal of work is focused on different seat fabrics, creating more breathable or more waterproof surfaces, and even adding built-in fragrances designed to increase feelings of well-being.

Indeed, the rising demand for SUVs on both sides of the Atlantic has brought with it a surge in demand for seat heaters. Today, carmakers are offering seat heaters which warm nearly every part of the seat. While the market for seat heating is warming up, demand for seat cooling is expected to gather momentum.

What is the PESTER analysis for the global automotive seating market?

Political

There have been a number of influences in seat design over the past decade, including changes in demographics, impact of globalization, fuel prices, raw material prices, environmental issues and ever more stringent vehicle safety regulations. At the same time, consumer tastes have changed significantly over the past decade. Consumers want greater comfort and convenience.

Economic

The emergence of the novel coronavirus strain at the end of 2019 has far-reaching implications for the entire automotive industry. In the short term, demand for vehicles and, therefore, the parts that go into making them has dropped significantly, which will see revenues and profits at most suppliers and OEMs drop rapidly.

In the longer term, companies will have to navigate resetting or restarting auto supply chains that could face additional restrictions following the outbreak. These additional costs, along with the dampened demand for parts and vehicles will weigh heavily on the balance sheets of both automakers and suppliers even once the virus is contained.

Social

Developments in vehicle seating have been taking place much faster than may be apparent on the surface. OEMs are demanding greater differentiation in their seat designs while consumers want more luxury features. The seat used to be just an object put into a car with nothing special added to it. But nowadays it is being transformed into a main feature. People are spending more and more time in their car and so expect a lot more in terms of comfort. The seat is therefore becoming an integral part of the design and appeal of a car.

Technological

While the focus has, for some time, been on improving the front seats, automakers have paid more and more attention on the second and third row seats. Rear seat design is getting more attention specifically in the areas of safety, mass, and flexibility. For example, luxury brands will often include more comfort features such as additional soft foam, heated and cooled seats, vertically and horizontally adjustable lumbar, massage systems, adjustable cushion length, and adjustable bolsters.

Environmental

Aside from green materials, a great deal of work is focused on different seat fabrics, creating more breathable or more waterproof surfaces, and even adding built-in fragrances designed to increase feelings of well-being. In terms of the appearance of vehicle seating, it would seem that these days trendy fabric for a seat insert in certain vehicles is more acceptable than it was, say, a few years ago. However, while trendy fabric has its place on some vehicles, it doesn’t suit all.

Regulatory

Manufacturers have responded with static or dynamic head restraint technologies in order to comply with FMVSS 202A. While the US motor vehicle regulations pertaining to occupant head restraints have gone unchanged for about two decades, this mandate is designed to improve head restraints to minimize potential whiplash injuries in low speed (10-15mph) rear end collisions.

What are the key segments of the global automotive seating market?

The automotive seating market is classified into front seating and heated front seats.

Front seating segment in the global automotive seating market

Front seat structures must enable individual adjustment mechanisms such as length adjusters, height and tilt adjusters and recliners. Toyota Boshoku America’s TB-NF 110 series of front seat frames consist of four basic parts: seat cushion, cushion spring, seatback and seatback spring.

Heated front seats segment in the global automotive seating market

Heated seats typically work by heating coils embedded in the seat. The technology itself is similar to that used in hairdryers and electric blankets. To prevent over-heating, most car seat heaters come with a thermostat that measures the actual temperature in the cushion. Most seat heaters have two settings, high and low, to allow the occupant to control the temperature. Although heated seats are available on several models, heated and cooled seats are gradually appearing. However, there are different technologies being used to create a cooled seat.
