Key Highlights
QR code–based payments are surging in Chile, driven by direct linkage with bank accounts and minimal hardware requirements for merchants. In March 2025, BancoEstado launched Rutpay, a QR-based payment app tied to CuentaRUT. Users either scan a merchant’s QR code using the ‘Scan’ feature or generate a QR code via the ‘Pay’ option for the merchant to scan; in both cases, the amount is withdrawn directly from the user’s CuentaRUT balance. The app further integrates utilities and other service bill payments, public transport via QR (Pasaje QR), and access to offers and promotions, all within a single interface.
Contactless payments are growing in Chile. In July 2025, Mastercard and railway company, EFE Valparaíso added contactless fare payment to buses in Quilpué and Villa Alemana. Passengers can pay with a credit, debit, or prepaid Mastercard card; QR codes; or the EFE transport card. Digital payment users receive fare discounts: the standard cash fare is CLP410 ($0.43) but drops to CLP350 ($0.37) when using digital payment methods.
Chile’s financial sector is evolving with regulatory authorities offering licenses to neo banks. These initiatives will drive competition in the banking space, helping boost payment card holding. For instance, in January 2026, Credicorp’s fintech arm, Tenpo, gained official approval from the Commission for the Financial Market (Comisión para el Mercado Financiero [CMF]) to become a licensed neobank and began its operations in H1 2026. Tenpo offers checking account along with a prepaid Mastercard. In addition, the neo bank offers Tenpo Standard and Black Mastercard credit card to customers.
