Key Highlights
The global cobalt production was valued at 140 thousand tonnes (kt) in 2020 and is projected to grow by a CAGR of more than 5% during 2021-2025. Demand for cobalt is expected to rise significantly over the coming years, due to its use in lithium-ion batteries and the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs).
The global natural graphite production in 2020 was valued at 943.6 thousand tonnes (kt) and is projected to grow by a CAGR of more than 10% during 2021-2025. This will be mainly due to the resumption of mining activities that were either under care and maintenance or closed temporarily due to pandemic-related lockdowns and restrictions.
Bauxite is the key ore for aluminum production, which is largely used in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries. Global bauxite production grew to 359.2Mt in 2020.
The global nickel mine production in 2020 was 2,272.0kt. The production is expected to grow at a stable growth in 2021. Output from Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil will be significant contributors to the overall growth.
The global zinc production is expected to be 12.1Mt in 2020, mainly due to COVID-19-related lockdowns and restrictions. According to the US Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries (USGS), global zinc reserves stood at 250 million tonnes (Mt), as of January 2021.
The global platinum group metal reserves totaled 69.0kt (thousand tonnes) in January 2021. Of this, South Africa accounted for the largest share equivalent to more than 90%, followed by Russia and Zimbabwe.
The global lead production was found to be 4,482.0kt in 2020 and is forecasted to grow by a CAGR of more than 2% by 2025. China, Australia, Russia, and Canada will be the key contributors to this growth.
