Key Highlights
Building on the objectives of Vision 2025, SARB has advanced its long-term payments modernization agenda under Strategy 2030, with the official launch of the Payments Ecosystem Modernization Program in September 2025. The program aims to modernize the National Payment System by developing faster, more secure, interoperable, and inclusive payment infrastructure, while expanding participation by banks, fintech companies, and non-bank payment service providers. It also focuses on strengthening settlement systems, enhancing digital identity and fraud prevention capabilities, promoting competition, and improving financial inclusion. In addition, in February 2026, SARB published the National Payment System Vision 2030+ consultation paper to guide the next phase of reform and outline a long-term framework for innovation, digital payments, and a resilient payments ecosystem.
Digital wallets are gaining traction in South Africa. To capitalize on this, in May 2026, the fintech company MyMoolah launched its digital wallet platform designed to support both consumer financial services and enterprise payment requirements in South Africa. The platform operates under a Third-Party Payments Provider registration issued by PASA and sponsored by Standard Bank. The wallet enables users to make payments, transfer funds, purchase prepaid services, pay bills, and access cash through participating networks. In addition to consumer services, MyMoolah offers enterprise wallet infrastructure that enables businesses to distribute funds digitally for various use cases, such as salary payments, insurance claims, loan disbursements, and customer payouts.
The South African National Roads Agency, Trans African Concessions (TRAC), and other toll concessionaires are transitioning to contactless payment systems. As part of a phased migration, select toll plazas began discontinuing magnetic stripe card payments on December 1, 2024. Effective from December 2025, magnetic stripe cards will no longer be accepted at toll plazas across South Africa. In their place, toll operators are implementing tap-to-pay functionality, allowing road users to settle toll fees using contactless payment methods. Motorists will be encouraged to utilize contactless cards, smart devices, TRAC tags or cash as payment methods. In anticipation of this shift, Nedbank deactivated magnetic stripe swipe functionality for all its debit cards at toll gates across South Africa from effective from January 2025.
