Vascepa Drug Details
Icosapent ethyl (Vascepa, Vazkepa) is a synthetic derivative of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid, acts as an antihyperlipidemic agent. It is formulated as soft gelatin capsules for oral route of administration. Vascepa is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride (TG) levels in adult patients with severe (more than 500 mg/dL) hypertriglyceridemia and indicated as an adjunctive (secondary) therapy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events among adults with elevated triglyceride levels (a type of fat in the blood) of 150 milligrams per deciliter or higher. Vascepa is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, coronary revascularization or hospitalization for unstable angina) in statin-treated patients with elevated triglycerides, who are at high risk of cardiovascular events due to established cardiovascular disease, or diabetes, and at least one other cardiovascular risk factor.Icosapent ethyl is under development for treatment of colorectal cancer, high triglycerides with mixed dyslipidemia and for reduction of cardiovascular events and coronavirus disease 2019 caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was also under development for the treatment of Huntington’s disease and colon cancer.
