Global nickel mine production is expected to reach significant position in 2021 after registering an estimated percentage of decline in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Output from Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil will be significant contributors to the overall growth. In contrast, production is expected to decline in Russia, South Africa and Finland owing to lower production from the Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines and the planned closure of African Rainbow Minerals’ Nkomati mine in 2021.

The increase in production will be supported by the expansion of Indonesia’s nickel industry, the resumption of production at the Philippines mines and the ramp up at the Santa Rita mine, which was previously halted in 2015, coupled with the expansion at Voisey's Bay mine.

Production over the forecast period (2021–2025) is expected to grow by 2025, with Indonesia, Russia, Canada and the Philippines being the key contributors to this growth. Combined production in these countries will increase by a major share in 2025.

Global Nickel trade

Global nickel exports dropped in 2020 primarily due to supply disruption, amid COVID-19, coupled with Indonesia’s nickel exports ban in January 2020. Indonesia was the largest exporter of nickel ores and concentrates until January 2020. With an aim to boost the Indonesia’s nickel downstream capacity, including refinery, nickel pig iron and stainless-steel capacity, Indonesia banned nickel ores and concentrate exports in January 2020, two years earlier than previously expected.

Similarly, global nickel imports declined in 2020. China is the largest importer of nickel ores and concentrates in the world, accounting for major share of the total in 2020, followed by South Korea and Japan.
