Ford Recalls 2.9 million Vehicles Again over Concerns about Rollaway Crashes

  • Ford Motor Co recalls more than 3.3 million vehicles in North America
  • The recall includes over 2.9 million vehicles in the US and 394,000 in Canada
  • Ford reports that the vehicles have a damaged or missing part that may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear.

Ford Motor Company announced the recall of more than 2.9 million vehicles because a damaged or missing item is preventing the vehicles from shifting into the proper gear. In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford said the recall covers various 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles.

Why the Recall?

Ford issued the recall after receiving six reports of property damage and four reports of injuries allegedly caused by the recalled vehicles. The problem has resulted in 1,630 warranty reports and 233 complaints to the company. A broken or missing shift cable bushing in a few Ford models is preventing the car from changing into the desired gear or cause the vehicle to roll after the driver enters the 'Park' position. There will be further investigations in the future.

Fifth Recall by Ford over same Issue

Since 2018, Ford has issued five recalls related to the problem. In case of the prior shift cable part, Ford recalled nearly 1.4 million vehicles worldwide. On the other hand, the company said on June 14th that it was recalling around 49,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles because a part could overheat and cause the vehicle to lose propulsion power. The next day, June 15th, Ford recalled 53,103 four-door 2021-2022 Bronco cars due to the possibility of the passenger-side rear door being opened from within the vehicle when the child safety lock is in the "ON" position.

Outlook:

Following the recall in April on the same issue, Ford continues to have talks with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about field reports pertaining to vehicles equipped with features that were not covered in prior recalls. The corporation is working feverishly to combat an increase in the number of recalls across their whole portfolio, which includes luxury, passenger, and utility vehicles. Ford claims that this is a safety recall, citing low claim rates and expected failure rates for the defective vehicles.
