Jaguar Land Rover to Upskill its Staff Globally

British automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced that it will train 60% of its global workforce over the next three years to develop, construct, and service electric vehicles (EVs) in preparation for its transition from fossil-fuel-based vehicles. The company intends to train 29,000 of its employees and staff at franchised dealerships.

JLR plans to retrain thousands of highly qualified automotive engineers and manufacturing workers who previously focused on the development of internal combustion cars to specialize in electrification, digital, and autonomous vehicles. Most of the company's retail technicians will receive training to maintain and repair EVs during the current fiscal year in order to address the emerging skill gaps. The company created training resources in partnership with the University of Warwick and the University of Coventry.

Road to Electrification

The transition to EVs necessitates the provision of new skills to employees who were previously trained to build and maintain fossil-fuel vehicles. Hence, automakers all over the world began to work to reskill their workforce to expand their electrification ambitions. In July 2022, Mercedes-Benz Group AG announced that it would invest more than EUR1.3 billion ($1.25 billion) in employee training until 2030. JLR has already stated the desire to phase out combustion engines at Jaguar, the smaller of the two brands, by 2025, while Land Rover will get its first fully electric vehicle in 2024. In recent months, the automaker slowed down the delivery of high-end SUVs and sports vehicles due to scarcity of semiconductors.

Over the last few years, the automotive industry registered a rapid increase in the sales of EVs, and this is expected to increase as a result of the impending restrictions on fossil-fuel vehicles. However, there are concerns that the reduction in the number of moving parts in EVs could result in a decline in well-paying manufacturing employment in the auto industry, particularly in engine or transmission facilities.
