Citroen C3 Aircross - Benchmarked Connectivity Features

HMI

Citroen has attempted to give it a ‘lounge-like’ feel, with colored accents on some of the finishing trim. Nestled in the center of the dash is the seven-inch capacitive touchscreen. This low-res color screen has pinch and zoom functionality, but no swipe capability. It responds well most of the time and works with both woolen and leather-gloved fingers.

Voice Control

Voice control in the C3 Aircross is one of its newest connectivity features. Enabled across telephony, media, and navigation features, the function worked well and was surprisingly accurate. The system indicates, via speech, that it can explain everything in greater detail, if one is a beginner but, if the driver is familiar with the voice control function, the user level can be changed from novice to expert, reducing the number of steps to execute a particular feature. This coaching means users can get the best out of the system, albeit within the pre-defined parameters of set voice commands.

Audio

Citroen has done away with FM and AM radio stations, offering only DAB digital radio. It is quick to shift ensemble frequencies automatically, as one moves from one area/mast to another. This seamless connectivity is impressive and hasn’t been present in all other models in these HOT reports. The Connect Nav system enables Bluetooth-streamed music from a smart device and can also execute playback from a USB stick. There is no option for a CD player at all and no AUX ports – this leads to a relatively clutter-free cabin but will limit the audio experience for some users.

Networking

There’s no embedded connectivity, so the system in the C3 Aircross relies on a tethered connection. There’s no ability to connect to private or public Wi-Fi networks to download any system updates. For security, this is still all done via the dealership, lacking the convenience of some rival manufacturers’ OTA updates.

ADAS

The C3 Aircross boasts a surround-view camera system, helpful for parking and seeing a birds-eye view around the vehicle. However, this is not the most advanced version of this feature we’ve seen to date. The software regularly glitches, meaning the view sometimes does not render immediately.

Conclusion

Citroen has made every attempt to offer a practical yet comfortable cabin, with all the latest on-board gadgets expected in its class, in a market already saturated with plenty of unnecessary functionality. The brand has achieved mixed success by stripping out some of that excess – the HUD and responsive voice control system certainly lend themselves well to Citroen’s simplifying philosophy. However, other design choices, such as the decision to digitize climate control, put Citroen further away from the front of the queue when it comes to achieving that all-important balance in connected vehicle technologies.
