Display
The first thing one is struck by in the A-Class is the display of the MBUX—an acronym for Mercedes Benz User Experience—a sleek, panoramic display, featuring two 10.25” displays—one for the centre and one for the cluster—sitting on a blended console behind. Cheaper trims feature two 7” versions. The highly sensitive centre display is laid out to display the eight main functions a driver might need—Phone, Navigation, Radio, Media, Comfort, Mercedes Me & Apps and Settings.
Voice Control
The voice control system is a Nuance-based feature, refined to have on-board and off-board (cloud-based) recognition. It is slick, smooth, and barely hesitates. But it doesn’t understand everything, despite giving it a really good go. Like ‘Hey Siri’ or ‘OK Google’, Mercedes has introduced an activation expression ‘Hi Mercedes’. In a southern English accent, slightly Northern, or Scottish accent, it responds, but it’s less happy with Russian or French-accented English.
Switchgear
With a total of five USB ports, there’s more than enough provision for device charging and data transfer. The upfront one is the Android Auto and Apple Carplay port. There are a further two in the centre console storage compartment and another two in the rear. These are, rather thoughtfully, USB-Type C ports, found on newer mobile handsets and fancy laptops, charging more quickly. In our loan vehicle, there was a Mercedes-branded multi-type adaptor to allow older devices to be connected, but this is unlikely to be part of a general purchase.

Navigation
Supported by HERE, the MBUX navigation is impressive. There are three ways to set the navigation, via the trackpad, touchscreen, or voice control. Using the voice control, the process is one step, or two, if the system hasn’t been there before and wants to check. Of course, keying in an address is more arduous, a full five steps. Furthermore, having both the keyboard AND handwriting as options is simply too much. To heighten the voice control accuracy on the navigation, Mercedes has integrated what3words, an app that allocates three random words to a set of coordinates, within a three-meter squared area.
ADAS
Like Tesla and BMW, Mercedes Benz offers a comprehensive suite of ADAS functions and ways to set driver preferences, such as chimes and warning sensitivity. In the Settings module, Mercedes uses really helpful visual displays to help train drivers on what all these different options are—something that will surely be welcomed by consumers. On a 3D render of the A-Class set to the left, drivers can select a function and see the area of the car affected illuminated. Toggling the function on and off shows the benefits of the feature.
