Volkswagen ID.4 - Benchmarked Connectivity Features

Display

VW’s focus on digitization has meant a radical change to the presentation of information inside the cabin. The 12- inch glossy touchscreen is slick and couples well with the equally glossy 5.3-inch cluster display – the latter of which shows only the most necessary information. Volkswagen has finally done away with the skeuomorphic speed dials, in favor of a simpler human-machine interface (HMI).

Voice Control and Telephony

The voice control suite operates telephony, audio, and climate control. The latter system has to be on for the voice control to work. The response is natural – “I’m hot” initiates a response of “Sure, the cabin will get cooler shortly”. Repeating what is said, the system instills a sense of confidence, earning it full marks for both accuracy and natural use. Similarly, the telephony suite was brilliant.

Switchgear

The sunroof is controlled with a physical button, but there is no longer a press-and-hold rocker switch in play. Instead, a haptic swipe is enough to touch to signal the sunroof to electronically open and close. It’s a neat and good use of haptic technology, which is found in other parts of the car, namely the steering wheel controls. Volume control is no longer achieved through a rocker, but a sliding haptic control. This approach is arguably physical enough to encourage less tech-savvy users to feel confident but does take some getting used to.

Networking

The privacy enables/disable mechanism is the menu you are greeted with, as you step into the car. You can select online or offline mode, where the latter will not send data back to VW.

Navigation

The European navigation suite offered is fairly slick. There are only three steps needed to set the destination and four steps to add a waypoint. The system understood postcodes and automatically split UK postcode format, which some rivals struggle with. The voice control worked equally well, and the voice guidance was easy to mute too.

ADAS

A notable absence from the ID.4’s advanced driver assistance suite is Park Assist. This was offered on the T-Roc and would attempt to get a driver into space, but there are only parking sensors to be found on the ID.4. It does, however, have all the safety ADAS features you’d expect from a contemporary model, such as Lane Keep Assist and Pedestrian Detection, which wasn’t available on the T-Roc back in 2018.
