A Joint Venture Between Sony Group Corp and Honda Motor

By 2026, a joint venture between Sony Group Corp. of Japan and Honda Motor plans to have its first electric automobiles on the road and begin selling them online in Japan and the US. According to the companies, the new electric vehicle (EV) would be more expensive and provide a new software system created by Sony that will facilitate recurrent income from entertainment and other services that will be billed monthly.

This is the first update from the company since Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture between two companies, was established in June 2022. Representatives of the new company spoke of a vision for a car that would operate almost like a mobile smartphone. However, key aspects such as pricing, battery range, and even the basis for the new car, are yet to be finalized.

From the onboard controls to the cloud-based services that will link with entertainment and payment systems, Sony will supply the new car's software system. Additionally, it will supply sensors and other equipment for a Level 3 autonomous drive system, enabling drivers to pay closer attention to the software services and content that will be provided. There was a marginal increase in the market value of EVs in Japan in 2022 in comparison to that in 2021, according to GlobalData.

Drivers will be able to ride in Level 3 systems, also known as limited self-driving automation, on highways without paying attention to the road or operating the steering wheel, but they must be prepared to regain control if necessary. All four automakers, including Ford, General Motors, and Mercedes Benz, offer some sort of hands-free driving assistance system.
