Light vehicle capacity of Europe

The light trucks market includes all light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and light buses and coaches (LBCs). This includes pick-ups and vans but excludes sports utility and similar vehicles. The market value is calculated in terms of manufacturer selling price (MSP) and excludes all taxes and levies.

The European light trucks market increased marginally by value after following a significant contraction by volume in recent years. The market is forecast to grow strongly by value and volume through the forecasted period. Market revenues are predicted to exceed previous high, as the Turkish and Russian markets are projected to expand rapidly. Trends in sales of new LCV’s are therefore often interpreted as a sign of business confidence in the immediate and short-term future, which remains strong in Europe.

Category segmentation

Light Commercial Vehicles is the largest segment of the light trucks market in Europe. It accounts for more than two-third of the market.

Geography segmentation

France owns the largest share in the European Light vehicle market in terms of capacity. Germany is second in the ranking list.

Competitive landscape

In the European light trucks market, there are a small number of large companies notably Peugeot, Renault, Volkswagen, and Ford, between whom competition is fierce. Following the global economic downturn of 2008 many companies have entered partnerships, in the case of Peugeot sought investment or restructured to adapt to prevailing conditions. However, a positive for the market is that these companies have since performed reasonably well. Companies operating in this market tend to have operations in other markets, such as passenger car manufacture, which reduces their reliance on the light trucks market to an extent.
