Competitive landscape
In the American light trucks market, there are a small number of large companies, between whom competition is fierce. Following the economic downturn that has been experienced on a global scale, the situation has improved, following a period of restructuring. Chrysler became a wholly owned subsidiary of Italian automaker Fiat, while General Motors has returned to private ownership, after receiving bailout funds from the US and Canadian governments. Both these companies have recovered after their previous problems which appears to bode well for the future of the market. Companies operating in this market tend to have operations in other markets, such as passenger car manufacture, which reduces their reliance on the light trucks market to an extent.
