Motorcycles Industry in the United Kingdom

The value of the UK motorcycles market declined in 2020 as a result of the COVID‐19 pandemic which reduced the volume of sales. The market is projected to bounce back in 2021, but it is expected to return to decline for the rest of the forecast period. A demand and supply shock amid lockdown measures resulted in the sharp decline of the market in 2020. The volume of sales in the UK market was down, a moderate decline compared to other developed markets. A stronger uptake in motorcycles sales was evident during the second half of the year following demand for individual mobility as an alternative to public transport and cars. Meanwhile, manufacturers’ generous discounts and cheap credit financing during that period helped to revive sales, mitigating losses during the first half of the year.

The performance of the market is forecast to decline further but at a slower pace, with a slow rise for the five‐year period 2020‐2025, which is expected to drive the market value. Comparatively, the French and German markets will grow faster, over the same period. The UK motorcycles are expected to recover from 2021 following the expected recovery of consumer spending. The gradual easing of containment measures and the immunization of the population will allow the recovery of economic activity, stimulating demand for transportation. The market is set to decline after 2021, following a rapid saturation of demand for motorcycles and the recovery of demand for new cars.

Mopeds are powered two‐wheeler vehicles with engine capacity of less than 50 c.c., generally also equipped for non‐motorized propulsion and with restricted maximum speed. For the purposes of this profile, all powered two‐wheelers other than mopeds are classed as 'motorcycles'. (The term 'scooter' refers to a two‐wheeler of any capacity that has its engine as part of the rear suspension, and/or has a step‐through chassis, thus depending on its engine capacity a scooter may fall into either moped or motorcycle category). Volumes reflect the number of new motorcycles sold each year.
