Waste is a two-sided problem in the consumer goods industry. Some products are disposed of for multiple reasons; on the other side, the waste is generated through packaging. There has been an increasing amount of single-use plastic and waste produced by consumer goods companies.
Companies need to be more mindful of the waste generated throughout their value chain. Companies like Procter & Gamble and Dabur India recently announced that they have achieved 'plastic waste neutrality’ by recycling a big chunk of their post-consumer plastic packaging waste. Companies have been under pressure to manage waste to be environmentally sustainable and increase consumer awareness. Being responsible for the environment helps companies attract new customers as consumers prefer to do business with companies that share their values.
Carlsberg AS (Carlsberg) is a producer and marketer of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Its product portfolio includes beers, alcohol-free beers, pilsner, lagers, and ciders. It also offers energy drinks, fruit beers, juices, low alcohol and ready-to-drink products, soft drinks, and water.
The total solid waste generated by Carlsberg in 2021 was 294.7 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 24% from 2020. Carlsberg recycled 191.3 thousand tonnes of waste during the same year. 19% of the total waste generated was sent to sanitary landfill, 13.3% of total waste was disposed of for land applications, and 2.1% of total waste was incinerated in 2021.
Carlsberg has set a target to achieve zero packaging waste by 2030. The brewery aims to use 100% recyclable, reusable or renewable bottles and cans, 90% of which are collected and recycled after use. Additionally, the company is targeting a 50% reduction in virgin fossil-based plastics and 50% recycled content in its bottles and cans.
