Per capita consumption of Beer segment in Croatia recorded a low-double-digit YoY decline in 2020
After a YoY growth in 2018, the per capita consumption of beer in Croatia declined significantly between 2018-2020.
Tourism – a major growth driver
Tourist arrivals into Croatia have been increasing over the past few years and the rise in tourism is one of major drivers for the beer and cider sector. According to the Croatian Tourist Board, the total number of tourist visits to Croatia during 2019 increased by a single-digit-percentage over the previous year. These tourists often seek niche, specialty offerings from small and innovative brewers, for unique consumption experiences. The growing influx of tourists has been a key driver of beer and cider volume, especially over on-premise channels. Beer volume over on-premise channels grew at a significantly higher rate compared to that of off-premise channels in 2019.
Growing economy boosts consumer spending
The Croatian economy recorded real GDP growth in 2019, driven by its favorable macroeconomic environment as a result of successful financial reforms by the government. Improving personal consumption, led by a falling unemployment rate that declined in 2019 from 2018, drove the growth in consumer spending. The rise in consumer purchasing power influenced the beer and cider sector positively in 2019, with value growth outpacing volume growth in both categories. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GDP in real terms is expected to fall in 2020, adversely impacting the sector.
Rise in sales of premium products
Breweries were able to grow their high-end businesses in 2019 by focusing more on carefully promoting their premium offerings as bundles of sophisticated and unparalleled consumption experiences. The strong growth posted by super-premium and premium segments of beer is attributed to the growing preference among consumers for craft creations, as well as attempts by brewers to encourage more consumption occasions in order to maximize revenue. The rise in the popularity of craft beers is expected to further drive up the volume share of premium beer variants in the coming years.
