The baby care market in Japan has steadily been growing since 2017, posting a low single-digit YoY growth in 2020. Declining birth rates and shrinking populations in Japan are largely affecting the market growth. 

Unicharm Corporation, Kao Corporations, Asahi Group Holdings held the top three leading market positions in Japan’s baby care industry.  

Unicharm, Merries, Wakodo, Pampers, Step, and Daio Paper were the leading brands in the baby care market in Japan in 2020.  

Baby Care Includes baby cereals, dry meals, baby drinks, baby finger foods like baby biscuits, fruit snacks, rice cakes, breadsticks, baby cereal bars, dippers, puffs, and savory snacks, powdered or liquid milk, personal care i.e., products for bath time use designed specifically for babies, which includes bubble baths and body washes, all this targeted specifically at babies aged 4-36 months. 

Unicharm Corporation leads the way in Japan's baby care market

Unicharm, the flagship brand of Unicharm Corporation covered the major share in Japan’s baby care market. The company recorded the highest sales by value in the baby care industry in Japan in 2020. 

Kao Corporation ranked second in the baby care market in Japan

Merries, the sole popular brand of Kao Corp. captured a major share in the baby care industry in Japan. Merries outperformed the other leading brands in Japan, exhibiting the highest YoY growth in 2020. 

The other market leading positions were held by Asahi Group Holdings, Proctor & Gamble, Meiji Holdings Co Ltd., and Daio Paper Corp.  

Asahi Group Holdings and Proctor & Gamble held significant market share in the baby care market in Japan.  

Wakodo, Gun-Gun, Goo Kitchen, Eiyo Marché and Tezukuri Oen were the top five brands, under Asahi Group Holdings to capture a major market presence in the baby care industry in Japan.
