The milk industry in China recorded a single-digit YoY growth in 2020, and a single-digit Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) between 2017-20. The growth came about as population grew concerned about health & wellness during the pandemic. Milk is often positioned by the state and dairy producers as a means for the Chinese consumer to get more protein into their diet, helping them to build and maintain the body’s immune system. The COVID-19 pandemic has focused consumers’ attention on the state of their health, and thereby what they can do to protect themselves. 

Yili Group, China Mengniu Dairy, Want Want China Holdings, Nestle, and Bright Food held the top five leading market positions in milk industry in China.  

Yili, Mengniu, Want Want, Bright, and Nestle were the leading brands in the milk industry. 

Milk products include all types of dairy milk including flavoured and unflavoured milks, long life milk, condensed milk, buttermilks, milkshake drinks, and excludes soy milks and rice milks and yoghurt based smoothie/"thickie" drinks. 

Yili Group leads the milk industry in China in 2020 

Yili Groupwas the leadingcompany (by value) in the Chinese milk market in 2020. Yili, and Shu Hua Milk are some of the prominent brands in milk products in China under the trademark of Yili Group. Among the brands, the Yili brand contributed maximum sales by value. 

China Mengniu Dairy ranked second in milk industry in China 

China Mengniu Dairy was the second largest company (by value) in the Chinese milk market in 2020. Mengniu brand was the biggest contributor to the company’s milk sales in China. Deluxe (Milk), Future Star, and Jun Le Bao are some of the other prominent brands selling milk items in China under China Mengniu Dairy. 

The other leading market positions in milk market in China were held by Want Want China Holdings, Nestle, and Bright Food 

Want Want China Holdings, Nestle, and Bright Food were among some of the other prominent companies in the Chinese milk market, owning flagship brands Want Want, Nestle, and Bright, respectively, selling milk products.
