Waste Generation by Tyson Foods in 2021

  • In 2021, Tyson Foods’ waste generation was 1,337 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 55% over 2020
  • Tyson Foods’ waste recycling rate was 85% in 2021
  • Tyson Foods aims to reduce annual waste by 75% by the end of FY2022

The problem of waste in the consumer goods sector is twofold. On the one hand, some products are thrown away for various reasons, and on the other, waste is produced during packaging. FMCG companies have been producing an increasing amount of waste and single-use plastic.

Companies need to be more mindful of the waste generated throughout their value chain. Companies like Procter & Gamble and Dabur India recently announced that they have achieved 'plastic waste neutrality’ by recycling a big chunk of their post-consumer plastic packaging waste. To be environmentally sustainable and increase consumer awareness, companies have been under pressure to manage waste. Being responsible for the environment helps companies attract new customers as consumers prefer to do business with companies that share their values.

Tyson Foods Inc (Tyson Foods) is a food processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork. The company is involved in breeding stock, feed production, processing, marketing, and transportation of chicken and related allied products.

Total waste generated by Tyson Foods in 2021 was 1,337 thousand tonnes, a decline of 55% from 2020. In 2021, around 85% of the total waste generated by Tyson Foods was recycled. Tyson Foods dumped 200 thousand tonnes of waste in landfills in the same year.

Tyson Foods is diverting operational waste and recycling packaging materials through Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) projects at several plants. Tyson Foods launched a new initiative to reduce product processing waste by focusing on composting, supporting animal sanctuaries, and donating products for hunger relief. This initiative helped Tyson Foods achieve a 56% reduction in waste during the first half of FY2022. The consumer packaging goods company is targeting an annual waste reduction of 75% by the end of FY2022.
