Indonesia foodservice market analysis

The overall value of the Indonesian foodservice profit sector declined during 2015 –2020. The decline in the foodservice profit sector was caused by the substantial reduction in the number of transactions in 2020 due to weaker purchasing power and operational restrictions on restaurants, cafés, and other foodservice outlets amid the COVID -19 outbreak. Take-aways and deliveries played a key role in mitigating the losses of foodservice businesses, especially in the QSR channel, due to convenience and digital and technological advancements. Independent operators dominate the profit sector, while chain operators fared better than independent operators during the pandemic in the QSR and FSR channels owing to the quick adjustments to evolving consumer habits. During 2020 –2025, Indonesia’s profit sector is forecast to grow at double-digit CAGR, primarily due to higher transactions.

Impact of COVID-19

COVID-19 restrictions, combined with the limitations on dine-in in restaurants and eateries, discouraged people to visit restaurants and other foodservice outlets. As a result, consumers switched towards food delivery services to eat meals at home. Consumers are concerned about their financial situation, these consumers will seek economical menus while eating out. In addition, these good value for money seeking consumers will further look to make their spending count by choosing outlets that offer a greater variety of dishes/cuisines, unique/exciting flavors, and superior taste or quality. Consumers also find convenience as a major appealing factor while consuming food and drinks outside the home.

Number of transaction highlights

The number of transactions declined across all profit sector channels during 2015–2020 due to weak economic conditions and social restrictions imposed in 2020. The FSR channel accounted for almost one-third of all transactions in the profit sector due to its large number of outlets and a greater number of quality food/drink options. The travel channel suffered the steepest drop in the number of transactions during 2015–2020, primarily due to the stagnant tourism sector amid the pandemic. It was followed by leisure and workplace channels as the government implemented social distancing norms and advised remote working. However, the travel channel is forecast to achieve the strongest growth during 2020–2025 as transactions in the channel are forecast to grow.

Transaction: The total number of visits by individuals to foodservice locations that involve the consumption of either food or drink. If several people visit one location at once and there is only one bill, such as a group dining in a restaurant, the number of transactions is counted as being one for each person in the group. If an individual purchases several items in an outlet over the course of a single visit, such as an individual spending an evening in a pub and purchasing several drinks, this is counted as one transaction.
