Cumulative Number of COVID-19 Vaccine Doses Administered in Japan from February 17, 2021 to June 9, 2022, by Day

The COVID-19 pandemic derailed the Japanese economy and threw the lives of the people out of gear. Even two years after its outbreak, the coronavirus disease that is causing respiratory illness throughout the world continues to be the topmost health crisis in Japan. The pandemic eroded consumer purchasing power, raised imports, increased supply chain costs, and restricted the country’s export growth. The recovery in Japan got off to a sluggish start in 2022 owing to the outbreak of the Omicron variant at the beginning of the year.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely impaired the employment ratio in Japan and damaged major industrial sectors such as tourism, automotive, and catering. The damage caused by the pandemic made it imperative for the government to extricate the economy from the crisis. Moreover, a significant percentage of the population considered the COVID-19 pandemic a potential threat to the community and wanted the government to implement preventive measures. Hence, the government started the vaccination drive.

As of June 9, 2022, Japan has administered more than 280 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to its population. Over 30,000 people lost their lives due to the coronavirus disease in the country.

The COVID-19 vaccination in Japan started at a slower pace than that in most other countries. However, the vaccination drive gathered momentum over time. Japan primarily used Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca vaccines for its population. The public health authorities also planned to use Janssen and Novavax vaccines over a specific period.

Japan donated more than a million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Taiwan and Iran. The country plans to send these countries another two million AstraZeneca vaccine doses. Japan also sent one million doses to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Iran also received two million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Japan through COVAX.

The country is preparing to obtain supplementary booster shots to protect the citizens from new variants of the coronavirus or if the effectiveness of the already administered vaccines diminishes over time.
