In March 2022, Ford filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a hydrogen-powered combustion engine. A hydrogen fuel-based engine runs on a propulsion system where energy stored as hydrogen is converted into electricity by the fuel cell. According to the patent, the delivery system would include injecting hydrogen directly into cylinders, which produces up to 15% more power than a gasoline engine with a similar setup.

Hydrogen is one of the most abundantly available and well-known elements on the planet, and its contribution to clean energy transition is significant, which will make it a gamechanger. It is light, storable, energy-heavy, and does not produce greenhouse gases (GHG). The hydrogen produced through electrolysis is called green hydrogen due to zero carbon emissions during the whole process. Electrolysis attracted significant attention due to its potential as a sustainable production process, which will attract more players for them to use electrolysis for hydrogen production.

Linde plc - It is an industrial gas and engineering company that supplies industrial, process, and specialty gases. There are 4,010 publications related to hydrogen in the name of Linde, while 1,209 patents out of 2,703 applications have been granted to it.

Panasonic Corp - It develops, produces, sells, and services a range of electric and electronic products. Panasonic has 3,743 publications in the field of hydrogen, and 796 patents have been granted to the company out of 2,794 applications.

Air Liquide SA - It is a provider of gases, technologies, and services to the industrial and health care sectors. Air Liquide has 3,278 publications in the field of hydrogen, and 1,193 patents have been granted out of 2,050 applications.

Toyota Motor Corp - It designs, manufactures, and sells passenger cars, buses, minivans, trucks, specialty cars, and sport-utility vehicles. Toyota Motor has 3,141 publications on hydrogen, and out of 2,242 patent applications, 848 have been awarded to the company.

BASF SE - It is a chemical company that carries out the production, marketing, and sales of chemicals, plastics, crop protection products, and performance products. There are 2,485 publications related to hydrogen in the name of BASF SE, while 1,038 patents out of 1,378 applications have been granted to it.
