The pace of increase has nearly halved since then, and it is anticipated that it will continue to decrease globally in the coming years.

The population of India reached 1.3 billion in 2021. India had the largest population group with 67.7% (908.7 million) of the population falling into the working-age group of 15-64 years in 2021. Below 15 years, was the second-largest population group in Australia with 25.4% (340.4 million) of the population. 65 years and above was the third largest population group with 6.9% (93.2 million) of the total population. 

India is the second-most populous nation in the world, with more than 1.33 billion people in 2020, according to Global Data. To provide employment to its large unskilled population pool in rural areas, the government has launched a scheme to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed employment every year to every household. The median age in India is 28.7 years in 2020, according to Global Data. Approximately 93.15% of India’s population was younger than 65 in 2020, according to Global Data, whilst 67.12% of the population was in the working-age group of 15–64, meaning there is a low number of dependents on the working population. The Indian population’s median age is also lower than the median age of the population of other emerging markets such as Indonesia and Turkey, as well as the world average, which gives India a significant edge over other developing and developed nations in terms of its demographic dividend.
