Global Population: Overview

The entire number of people living in a nation or area is referred to as its population. The economy, female fertility rates, birth rates, mortality rates, healthcare facilities, expanding urbanization, immigration and emigration rates, education, and other social and cultural elements are only a few of the many variables that affect a nation's population growth.

Currently, the global population is growing at a low single-digit annual rate. The population is projected to grow by 81 million people annually. The population of the world has more than doubled between 1959 and the 2000s. The annual rate of population increase reached its high in the late 1960s. The pace of increase has nearly halved since then, and it is anticipated that it will continue to decrease globally in the coming years.

Italy Population Distribution

The population of Italy reached 59.2 million in 2021. Italy had the largest population group with 63.8% (37.7 million) of the population falling into the working-age group of 15-64 years. 65 years and above, was the second-largest population group in Italy with 23.4% (13.9 million) of the population. Below 15 years was the third largest population group with 12.8% (7.6 million) of the total population in 2021.

The trend in population growth in Italy was like most other European nations. During the 1970s, the phenomenon of large-scale immigration into Italy began. While other European nations, such as the UK and Germany, closed their borders to immigrants, Italy not only served as a destination, but also functioned as a transit hub for several years. A large number of immigrants has considerably changed the religious and ethnic composition of the country.

Italy’s aging population and a shrinking working-age population are a major concern for the Italian government. These scenarios are increasing the financial burden of the county in terms of social expenditure. With a declining birth rate, Italy is facing the grim situation of having one of the fastest aging populations in Europe, which will put enormous pressure on its social security system. In addition, low labor participation and an aging population may also lead to severe labor shortages in the future.
