Self-employed persons are the ones who work in their own businesses, farm, or professional practice. A self-employed person is considered to be working if she/he meets one of the following criteria: works for the purpose of earning profit spends time on the operation of a business or is in the process of setting up his/her business. Self-employed persons include employers and own-account workers. The total self-employed population is calculated by adding the self-employed female population and the self-employed male population.

Between 2010 and 2021, Maldives, Malta, South Africa, Brazil, Botswana, New Zealand, Luxembourg and Ecuador were some of the countries with the highest growth in the number of self-employed people.

Romania, South Korea, Moldova, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, Afghanistan, Cyprus, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, and Greece were some of the countries with the lowest growth in the number of self-employed people, between 2010 and 2021.
