Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are one of the major causes of rising global warming and the oil & gas industry accounts directly & indirectly for one-third of the global emissions. CO2, methane, and NOx gases make up a large portion of greenhouse gases emitted by burning oil, fossil fuels, and other sources. Due to rising GHG emissions from companies, it became important among major contributing sectors to report gas emissions during their operations.
GHG emissions are classified into three categories: scope 1, 2, and 3. Direct GHG emissions from sources owned or controlled by the corporation are referred to as Scope 1 emissions. Scope 2 emissions are indirect GHG emissions which include emissions from the purchased or acquired electricity, steam, heat, and cooling by the company. Scope 3 refers to the company's other indirect emissions, which arise from sources that the company does not own or control.
PetroChina, Saudi Aramco, and Shell are major oil and gas companies with a substantial amount of Scope 2 emissions. Oil and gas companies are focusing on reducing direct (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2) related to their operational activities.
PetroChina, a subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Corporation, is one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases. PetroChina's Scope 2 emissions totaled 38.20 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq) in 2021, accounting for 24% of PetroChina's overall GHG emissions. The oil and gas firm is concentrating on new energy such as geothermal, solar, wind, and hydrogen energy to cut GHG emissions, and has constructed 57,500 KW of wind and solar power capacity in oil and gas fields in 2021.
Saudi Aramco, a state-owned energy company, is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters. In 2021, Aramco’s Scope 2 emissions accounted for 18.7 MtCO2eq which is 24% of Aramco’s total GHG emissions. The oil and gas company began developing the Jafurah unconventional gas field in 2021 to support Saudi Arabia's goal of producing half of its power from gas and the remainder from renewables, which will help the country's aim of promoting clean energy.
Shell, an integrated oil and gas company based in the UK, is one of the major GHG emitters. Shell's Scope 2 emissions totaled 8 MtCO2eq in 2021, accounting for 0.59% of Shell's overall GHG emissions. The corporation is aiming to cut emissions, declaring in October 2021 that it will cut total emissions by half by 2030.
