Labor Force Participation

The Labor force participation rate is defined as the ratio of the total labor force of working age that are either employed or seeking employment, to the overall size of the total population in the same age group. The labor force or workforce of a country comprises the number of people of working age who are either employed or seeking employment. Typically, this would include everyone of working age `to work. People excluded are those falling outside the working-age group (such as students and retired persons), as well as people of working age who, either voluntarily or due to other constraints, are not seeking employment in the period under consideration (such as stay-at-home parents and people in prisons or similar institutions).

The Female labor force participation rate is defined as the ratio of a female labor force of working age that are either employed or seeking employment, to the overall size of the total female population in the same age group. The Male labor force participation rate is defined as the ratio of a male labor force of working age that is either employed or seeking employment, to the overall size of the total male population in the same age group.

The labor force participation rate of the United States was 69.8% in 2021. The rate was highest in 2018 and 2019 at 72.6% and lowest in 2020 at 69.2%, between 2018 and 2021.
