Life expectancy at Birth Segmentation: Gender
Life expectancy in a country depends on multiple factors including healthcare, lifestyle, resources and even culture. Since 2018, the life expectancy for both male and female has increased constantly. In 2021, the life expectancy of females was 86 years. Compared to the growth of life expectancy for females, the growth of life expectancy for males has increased slightly over the years. In 2020, the life expectancy of the total population was 83 years, whereas for males it was 81 years, and 86 years for females.

Long-term forecasts by the OECD indicate that the old age population will be equivalent to 44.9% of the working age population (20–64 years) by 2050, compared to just 29.8% in 2020. By 2080, it is forecast to increase to 54%.
Aging Population an Area of Concern
Like other developed nations, Canada is facing the challenge of an increasing elderly population. The proportion of people in the 65+ age group increased from 16.7% in 2015 to 19% in 2020. According to GlobalData, the share of the old age population is forecasted to increase to 21.6% by 2025. Statistics Canada forecasts that the aging population will increase to over 23% by 2030. According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population growth has been the highest among the G7 countries in recent years due to migration. The country’s population is projected to increase by 1.1% to 38.4 million in 2021 and at an average annual rate of 1.0% over 2021–2025 to 40.0 million by 2025.
