Life Expectancy in India
Life expectancy in a country depends on multiple factors including healthcare, lifestyle, resources and even culture. The life expectancy for females in India has decreased over the years. In 2018, the average life expectancy was 73 years for females and in 2022 it is expected to be 69 years. In fact, the life expectancy for males has also decreased between 2018-2022. In 2018 it was 70 years and in 2022 it is expected to be 65 years.
Median Age
The median age in India is 28 years in 2021. Approximately 93.15% of India’s population was younger than 65 in 2021, whilst 67% of the population was in the working-age group of 15–64, meaning there is a low number of dependents on the working population.
Improving Healthcare Landscape and Reducing Infant Mortality
Life expectancy in India increased from 59.1 years in 1991 to around 69.7 years in 2020. However, the high rate of infant mortality remains a major area of concern in the Indian health landscape. India had the highest infant mortality rate amongst the BRICS nations in 2020, with an infant mortality rate of 40.53 deaths per 1,000 live births. In contrast, the average BRICS infant mortality rate for the same year stood at 21.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Large Young Population
The Indian population’s median age is also lower than the median age of the population of other emerging markets such as Indonesia and Turkey, as well as the world average, which gives India a significant edge over other developing and developed nations in terms of its demographic dividend.
Growing Population in India
India is the second most populous nation in the world, with more than 1.3 billion people as of 2020. India’s growing population has placed an excessive burden on natural resources such as water, forests, sand, rocks and minerals, and on environmental quality. Although India is home to rich biodiversity and has a strong environmental policy framework in place, the desired results are yet to be achieved at ground level.
