Life Expectancy in Russia 

Life expectancy in a country depends on multiple factors including healthcare, lifestyle, resources and even culture. The life expectancy for females in Russia has increased over the years. In 2018, the average life expectancy was 77 years for females and in 2022 it is expected to be 78 years. In fact, the life expectancy for males has also increased between 2018-2022. In 2018 it was 65 years and in 2022 it is 67 years. The total life expectancy at birth in Russia was 72 years in 2021. In 2018 the total life expectancy at birth was 71 years.   

The Age Dependency Ratio 

According to the World Bank, the age dependency ratio, defined as the ratio of people older than 64 years and younger than 15 years to the working-age population (between 15–64 years), is around 51.2% in 2020, up from 38.9% in 2010. The increasing age dependency ratio will put pressure on social security and old-age pensions. At the same, the death rate in Russia is expected to increase due to the pandemic induced health crisis. 

Declining Population 

Russian has been witnessing population decline since the early 1990s, while the country’s aging population is beginning to increase. According to MarketLine, the Russian population was estimated to be around 144.20 million in 2020. Approximately 15.70% of the Russian population was aged above 65 years, while 67.15% of the population was aged between 15 and 64 years, and around 17.15% of the population was under 15 years of age, as of 2020. The average life expectancy in Russia was 72 years as of 2021. Moreover, high consumption levels of tobacco and alcohol have been recognized as an important factor in the low life expectancy of Russian males.
