France healthcare providers market analysis

The French healthcare providers sector has grown weakly in the historic period but did grow marginally Y-o-Y in 2021. This was likely caused by increased need for healthcare providers, particularly hospitals, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has increased the pressure on France’s healthcare system with increased hospitalizations and need for ICU beds and ventilators. This has meant there has been an increase in the inpatient care segment as many who would not normally need hospital treatment have required it throughout the course of the year. The country’s aging population has meant that outpatient care has remained high.

Growth is expected to remain similar in the forecast period as the lasting effects of the pandemic are felt. The economy faced decline through 2020, which could reduce funding for the health system, although there is also likely to be additional injections of cash to make up for this. Additionally, the sector will be crucial in the mass vaccine rollout in 2021.

The healthcare providers sector is valued as total expenditure on healthcare in each country. This includes final consumption spending on healthcare goods and services. Goods and services in this sector include inpatient, outpatient, long-term medical care, medical goods including pharmaceuticals and supplies, and collective services and capital formation such as administration requirements and development costs. Public spending (e.g. by national and local governments and social security schemes) and private spending (e.g. payments made by private-sector health insurers and individual out-of-pocket expenditures) are both included.

Its major acquisition of Capio, another pan-European healthcare company. The acquisition made Ramsay into one of the biggest healthcare providers in the world, and Capio directly increased revenues for Ramsay Générale de Santé, the conglomerate’s French division.

Korian is one of the home-grown leaders of private healthcare in France. It was also Europe’s largest retirement home operator in 2020, the latter constituting the majority of its business. However, its acquisition of the Omega network of retirement homes early in the year led to a steep fall in the company’s share price after five Omega residents were found to have died of food poisoning.
