Germany healthcare providers market analysis
The German healthcare providers sector has grown moderately in the historic period and grew strongest in 2020. This was caused by increased need for healthcare providers, particularly hospitals, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compulsory health insurance premiums are by far the biggest source of expenditure on Germany’s public healthcare system, which is the dominant end-user of resources in the sector.
Germany is quickly establishing itself as a European leader in digital healthcare, having first passed its E Health Act in 2016. In 2019, the passing of the Digital Supply Act, or Digital Care Act as it has also been called, enabled doctors to prescribe medical apps to patients to increase their ability to administer their own care independently. Another benefit of the reform going forwards could be the use of medical data collected through these apps for medical research, giving Germany an advantage in the global R&D market.
The healthcare providers sector is valued as total expenditure on healthcare in each country. This includes final consumption spending on healthcare goods and services. Goods and services in this sector include inpatient, outpatient, long-term medical care, medical goods including pharmaceuticals and supplies, and collective services and capital formation such as administration requirements and development costs. Public spending (e.g. by national and local governments and social security schemes) and private spending (e.g. payments made by private-sector health insurers and individual out-of-pocket expenditures) are both included.

Fresenius Vamed, the subsidiary offering projects and services for other private and public hospitals, was the smallest but fastest growing part of the business during recent years. Fresenius saw its Medical Care and Helios hospitals businesses struggling in recent years, but has remained by far the leader of the private healthcare segment.
Asklepios Kliniken, the next-biggest private healthcare provider in Germany is Asklepios Kliniken, primarily a hospitals chain, with an increasing emphasis on digital healthcare services and telemedicine. The company’s revenues and profits were notably impacted in the third quarter of 2019 by new nursing regulations, which saw its staff costs rise significantly.
