US healthcare providers market analysis

The US healthcare providers sector has grown strongly over the historic period. Strong growth in 2021 was caused by increased need for healthcare providers, particularly hospitals, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The US is by far the world’s most valuable market for healthcare providers, thanks to its predominantly private and highly-developed healthcare system. Whist there is no universal access to healthcare, the healthcare expenditure per capita, over 50% of which comes from out-of-pocket spending, is higher than anywhere else in the world. The country accounts for almost half of the global healthcare providers sector.

The healthcare providers sector has been under strain as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has evidently led to growth in the sector with demand for healthcare services rising but has put a strain on resources and made cost-efficiency difficult to maintain. The sector has not been helped by former President Trump’s dismissal of the effects of the virus with a lack of restrictions leading to the US having the highest cases globally

The healthcare providers sector is valued as total expenditure on healthcare in each country. This includes final consumption spending on healthcare goods and services. Goods and services in this sector include inpatient, outpatient, long-term medical care, medical goods including pharmaceuticals and supplies, and collective services and capital formation such as administration requirements and development costs. Public spending (e.g. by national and local governments and social security schemes) and private spending (e.g. payments made by private-sector health insurers and individual out-of-pocket expenditures) are both included.

Key players

HCA Healthcare Inc runs non-profit hospitals in the US and specialist medical facilities, and sees millions patients per year across its international operations. HCA’s other revenues streams include administration and management services for other hospitals, which further increase its importance to the healthcare landscape.

Tenet Healthcare Corporation, a health care services company, operates general hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, diagnostic imaging centers and related health care facilities. The company operates multiple hospitals and healthcare facilities. Tenet also operates Conifer Health Solutions, which provides healthcare support services to health systems and other clients.

Ascension Health, another of the sector’s largest operators is the Catholic health system Ascension Health, which runs multiple facilities all over the country, although these are smaller than most HCA facilities, and the system sees millions outpatients per year. In 2019 Ascension was pushed to the forefront of discussions about in e-Health when it announced a controversial data-sharing project with Google for the development of AI technology.
