Population growth analysis of Cameroon
Cameroon population has increased significantly between 2000 and 2019. The country’s fertility rate has decreased from its pre-1990 level, resulting in a slowdown in the population’s growth rate. Compared to 1990, the country’s death rate decreased in 2020. The population density in the country has more than doubled in 2020 to that of 1990. In Cameroon, the male population is higher than the female population, which is pretty evident when compared to the male-to-female birth rates.
Population Segmentations
Age and Gender: The 2020 age structure indicates that most of Cameroon’s population is young with a maximum percentage of the population belonging to the 15-64 years age group, followed by 10-14 years age group, and the rest belonging to the population aged 65+. The split remains the same even if we further segment the population by gender, the maximum percentage of the male/female population belongs to the 15-64 years age group, followed by 10-14 years age group, and the rest belonging to the population aged 65+.
Urban and Rural: Prior to 2007, more people resided in rural areas than urban areas. In 2007, the population of Cameroon was split almost equally between the urban and rural areas. Post 2007, the situation reversed to that of pre-2007 as more people resided in urban areas than the rural area. While the urbanization rate has been on a constant decline since 1990, the population growth rate in urban areas remained higher than that of rural area.
Major city population split by broad age group
The population trend in the two major cities of the country, Yaoundé and Douala remained similar in 2020. The maximum percentage of the population in both the cities belonged to the 15-64 years age group, followed by the 10-14 years age group, and the rest belonging to the population aged 65+.
