The governments mostly earn from taxes and fees and spend it on various national aspects such as defense, infrastructure, grants for research, education, and the arts, and various social and health programs.

According to GlobalData, the United States had the highest budget revenue in 2021 at $3.5 trillion, followed by China ($3.1 trillion), Germany ($1.9 trillion), Japan ($1.8 trillion), France ($1.4 trillion), the United Kingdom ($1.1 trillion), Italy ($944 billion), and Brazil ($772 billion).

The countries with the lowest budget revenue include Malta ($5.6 billion), Macau (SAR) ($8.5 billion), Iceland ($9.5 billion), Cyprus ($10.4 billion), Latvia ($14.5 billion), Estonia ($13.1 billion), Uruguay ($19.2 billion) and Nigeria ($20.0 billion).

The global average budget revenue was $335 billion in 2021 as per GlobalData, which was 6.6% more than the previous year.
