Rural Population
According to national statistical offices, the term "rural population" refers to people who reside in rural areas. It is determined by subtracting the urban population from the total population. Due to different country coverages, the total population may not equal the sum of the urban and rural populations. The difference between the total population and the urban population is also used to calculate the rural population.
Due to national differences in the characteristics that distinguish urban from rural areas, the distinction between urban and rural populations is not amenable to a single definition that would be applicable to all countries. National definitions are most commonly based on the size of the locality.
