Total Deaths represent the total number of deaths occurring during a certain period. Like how life expectancy is measured, this measures the population's overall health by measuring the rate of deaths from all causes. Death is calculated by dividing the total number of deaths from a disease by the total population.

Total Deaths: Global Scenario

India, China, the United States, Russia, and Nigeria are among the top five countries with the highest number of deaths in the world in 2021. Montserrat, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Nauru, Saint Helena, Cook Islands, and Anguilla were among the nations with the lowest number of deaths globally in 2021.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), in the 24 months from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021, 14.91 million people died worldwide because of COVID-19, which is 9.49 million more deaths than were officially recognized as directly linked to COVID-19.

The number of deaths in India attained a value of 14,912,558 people in 2021. It recorded a growth of 51.40% in 2021 compared to the previous year. Between 2018-2021, the number of deaths in India increased by 74.47%. The number of deaths in India was highest in 2021 with 14,912,558 people and lowest in 2018 with 8,547,415 people, between 2018 and 2021.

Top Causes of Death in 2021:

  • Ischemic heart disease: Ischemic heart disease, which accounts for 16% of all deaths worldwide, is the world's leading cause of mortality. This disease has shown the highest increase in deaths since 2000, with an increase of more than 2 million deaths to 8.9 million deaths in 2019 
  • Stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The second and third most common killers, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respectively account for 11% and 6% of all deaths
  • Lower respiratory infections: As the fourth most common cause of death, lower respiratory infections continued to be the most lethal communicable disease around the globe. The number of deaths has decreased significantly, though; in 2019, it claimed 2.6 million lives, 460,000 fewer than it had in 2000
  • COVID-19 deaths: More than 153 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and 3.2 million deaths associated with them had been reported to WHO as of 1 May 2021. The most severely impacted regions are the Americas and Europe, which combined account for more than 75% of all cases recorded globally and have case rates per 100,000 people that are 5,999 and 5,455, respectively
