Total Death is a term used to describe all deaths that took place over a specific time. Calculating the rate of deaths from all causes gauges the population's general health in a manner like how life expectancy is determined. A disease's overall death toll is calculated by dividing the total population by the disease's death toll.

Total Deaths: Global Scenario

Nigeria is the country with the highest death rate worldwide in 2021, followed by India, China, the United States, and Russia. The countries with the lowest death rate worldwide in 2021 include Montserrat, Saint Pierre, and Miquelon, Nauru, Saint Helena, Cook Islands, and Anguilla.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 14.9 million people died worldwide because of COVID-19 in the 24 months from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021, which is 9.49 million more deaths than were formally acknowledged as directly linked to COVID-19.

The number of deaths in Italy attained a value of 693,336 people in 2021. It recorded a decline of 3.78% in 2021 compared to the previous year. Between 2018-2021, the number of deaths in Italy increased by 12.53%. The number of deaths in Italy was highest in 2020 with 720,572 people and lowest in 2019 with 615,500 people, between 2018 and 2021.

Top Causes of Death in 2021:

  • Ischemic heart disease: The leading cause of death worldwide is ischemic heart disease, which accounts for 16% of all fatalities. With an increase of more than 2 million deaths to 8.9 million deaths in 2019, this disease has shown the highest increase in deaths since 2000 
  • Stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the second and third most common killers, are responsible for 11% and 6% of all fatalities, respectively 
  • Lower respiratory infections: Lower respiratory infections continued to be the most fatal communicable disease worldwide, ranking as the fourth most common cause of death. However, fewer people are dying from it now; in 2019, it claimed 2.6 million lives, 460,000 fewer than it had in 2000. 
  • COVID-19 deaths: As of May 1, 2021, the WHO had received reports of more than 153 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and 3.2 million deaths related to them. The two regions with the highest case rates per 100,000 people are the Americas and Europe, which together account for more than 75% of all cases reported globally
