Trends for Hospitalizations Rates vs. Vaccine Implementation for the US

  • Daily hospitalization rate has been stabilized and subsequently decreased to less than 25,000 as of June 8, 2022.
  • Around 221.4 million US population are vaccinated, as of June 8, 2022.
  • Vaccine hesitancy, new variants, and removal of social distancing measures caused increases in hospitalizations at the beginning of 2022, and the daily hospitalization rate had crossed 150,000 in January 2022

For nearly two years, hospitals and healthcare workers across the US have faced enormous strain due to highly infectious coronavirus and its variants. The proliferation of the subvariants adds more ambiguity to the trajectory of the pandemic in the US. However, vaccination has been started and covered more than two-thirds of the US population.

The US has shown a decrease in hospitalization following vaccine implementation. Vaccination was started in December 2020 when the daily hospitalization rate was around 1 million. After that, the daily hospitalization rate has been stabilized and subsequently decreased to less than 25,000 as of June 8, 2022; however, vaccine hesitancy, new variants, and removal of social distancing measures caused increases in hospitalizations at the beginning of 2022, and the daily hospitalization rate had crossed 150,000 in January 2022. The increase in hospitalizations was worrisome as it was similar in magnitude to the peak observed early in 2021. Most hospitalizations and deaths occur in unvaccinated individuals, though the Delta and Omicron variants are easily spread regardless of vaccination status. As of June 8, 2022, around 221.4 million US population are vaccinated.

Children were not allowed to take the vaccine earlier, but given the rise of new virus variants, they are also entitled to take the vaccine after FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approvals. Booster doses are also given to senior citizens to tackle new waves of coronavirus. The US has administered vaccines mainly from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.

Health officials should encourage people to obtain the vaccine and follow COVID advice, such as wearing masks and avoiding large crowds, so that hospitals are not overburdened and patients who genuinely require medical treatment can receive it.
