Veladero Mine in San Juan, was the largest surface mine in Argentina, producing approximately 19.47 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced silver (728.77 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Veladero Mine is owned by Shandong Gold Group Co Ltd;Barrick Gold Corp, and is due to operate until 2031. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 1.99 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing silver (1.97 thousand tonnes), was the Lindero Project located in Salta. The Lindero Project is owned by Fortuna Silver Mines Inc, and is due to operate until 2033.
Chinchillas Mine located in Jujuy was the third-largest mine, the Don Nicolas Project located in Santa Cruz was the fourth-largest mine, and the Sierra Grande Mine located in Rio Negrob was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.45 mmtpa, 0.41 mmtpa and 0.3 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Chinchillas Mine is owned by SSR Mining Inc which is due to operate until 2028, the Don Nicolas Project is owned by Cerrado Gold Inc which is due to operate until 2028 and the Sierra Grande Mine is owned by China Metallurgical Group Corporation.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Veladero Mine, Lindero Project, Chinchillas Mine, Don Nicolas Project, and Sierra Grande Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 23.61 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
