Australia: Five Largest Coal Mines in 2021

  • Loy Yang Mine in Victoria, was the largest coal-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 20.9 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 26.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Loy Yang Mine is owned by AGL Energy Ltd, and is due to operate until 2048. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 18.9 million tonnes and an estimated 18.66 mmtpa of ROM, was the Goonyella Riverside Mine located in Victoria. The Goonyella Riverside Mine is owned by Mitsubishi Corp, and is due to operate until 2056.

  • Moolarben Mine located in New South Wales was the third-largest mine, the Mount Arthur Coal Mine located in New South Wales was the fourth-largest mine, and the Yallourn Mine located in Victoria was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 18.4 million tonnes, 14.9 million tonnes and 14 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Moolarben Mine, the Mount Arthur Coal Mine and the Yallourn Mine had an estimated ROM production of 20.4 mmtpa, 21.3 mmtpa and 15.38 mmtpa respectively. The Moolarben Mine is owned by Yancoal Australia Ltd which is due to operate until 2030, the Mount Arthur Coal Mine is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2041 and the Yallourn Mine is owned by CLP Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2028.

  • The five largest coal mines, i.e., Loy Yang Mine, Goonyella Riverside Mine, Moolarben Mine, Mount Arthur Coal Mine, and Yallourn Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 87.1 million tonnes of coal, 102.57 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
