Yandi Mine in Western Australia, was the largest iron ore-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 80.7 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 60.2 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Yandi Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2023. The second largest iron ore-producing mine with an estimated iron ore production of 74.4 million tonnes and an estimated 88.8 mmtpa of ROM, was the Mount Whaleback Mine located in Western Australia. The Mount Whaleback Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2036.
Jimblebar Hub located in Western Australia was the third-largest mine, the Area C Mine located in Western Australia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Yandicoogina Mine located in Western Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with a total iron ore production of 67.4 million tonnes, 61.6 million tonnes and 56.9 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Jimblebar Hub, the Area C Mine and the Yandicoogina Mine had an estimated ROM production of 67.15 mmtpa, 59 mmtpa and 64.47 mmtpa respectively. The Jimblebar Hub is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2060, the Area C Mine is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2027 and the Yandicoogina Mine is owned by Rio Tinto which is due to operate until 2039.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Yandi Mine, Mount Whaleback Mine, Jimblebar Hub, Area C Mine, and Yandicoogina Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 341 million tonnes of iron ore, 339.62 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
