Mount Isa Zinc Mine in Queensland, was the largest zinc-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 329.8 thousand tonnes of zinc and an estimated 8.1 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mount Isa Zinc Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest zinc-producing mine with an estimated zinc production of 279.6 thousand tonnes and an estimated 3.9 mmtpa of ROM, was the McArthur River Mine (Zinc) located in Queensland. The McArthur River Mine (Zinc) is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2038.
Golden Grove Mine located in Western Australia was the third-largest mine, the Dugald River Project located in Queensland was the fourth-largest mine, and the Century Tailings Mine located in Queensland was the fifth-largest mine, with a total zinc production of 192.2 thousand tonnes, 184.9 thousand tonnes and 128.2 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Golden Grove Mine, the Dugald River Project and the Century Tailings Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.21 mmtpa, 1.86 mmtpa and 9.46 mmtpa respectively. The Golden Grove Mine is owned by EMR Capital Group which is due to operate until 2031, the Dugald River Project is owned by China Minmetals Corp which is due to operate until 2044 and the Century Tailings Mine is owned by New Century Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2030.
The five largest zinc mines, i.e., Mount Isa Zinc Mine, McArthur River Mine (Zinc), Golden Grove Mine, Dugald River Project, and Century Tailings Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1,114.7 thousand tonnes of zinc, 24.57 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
