Belgium: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Marche-les-Dames Quarry in Namur, was the largest mine in Belgium, producing approximately 3.03 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Marche-les-Dames Quarry is owned by Lhoist Group. The second largest mine with approximately 2.73 mmtpa of ROM, was the Nameche Dolomite Quarry located in Namur. The Nameche Dolomite Quarry is owned by Lhoist Group.

  • Boverie Quarry located in Namur was the third-largest mine, the Maizeret Quarry located in Walloon Brabant was the fourth-largest mine, and the Moha Limestone Quarry located in Namur was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.53 mmtpa, 0.77 mmtpa and 0.75 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Boverie Quarry is owned by Lhoist Group which is due to operate until 2047, the Maizeret Quarry is owned by Carmeuse SA and the Moha Limestone Quarry is owned by Carmeuse SA.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Marche-les-Dames Quarry, Nameche Dolomite Quarry, Boverie Quarry, Maizeret Quarry, and Moha Limestone Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 8.83 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
