Orapa Mine in Central District, was the largest mine in Botswana, producing approximately 10.58 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced diamond (8,902.44 thousand carats) in 2021. The Orapa Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana, and is due to operate until 2037. The second largest mine with approximately 10.17 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing diamond (12,893 thousand carats), was the Jwaneng Mine located in Kgalagadi District. The Jwaneng Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana, and is due to operate until 2037.
Karowe Mine located in Central District was the third-largest mine, the Letlhakane Mine located in Central District was the fourth-largest mine, and the Morupule Mine located in Central District was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.69 mmtpa, 2.96 mmtpa and 1.67 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Karowe Mine is owned by Lucara Diamond Corp. which is due to operate until 2026, the Letlhakane Mine is owned by Government of Botswana;Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2044 and the Morupule Mine is owned by Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest mines, i.e., Orapa Mine, Jwaneng Mine, Karowe Mine, Letlhakane Mine, and Morupule Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 29.06 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
