East Maritsa Coal Mine in Stara Zagora, was the largest underground mine in Bulgaria, producing approximately 4.12 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The East Maritsa Coal Mine is owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 2.21 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (18.18 thousand tonnes), was the Chelopech Mine located in Sofia. The Chelopech Mine is owned by Dundee Precious Metals Inc, and is due to operate until 2030.
Malko Turnovo Mine located in Burgas was the third-largest mine, the Burgas Mine located in Burgas was the fourth-largest mine, and the Dimov Dol Mine located in Smolyan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.19 mmtpa, 0.1 mmtpa and 0.05 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Malko Turnovo Mine produced approximately 5.19 thousand tonnes of copper, the Burgas Mine produced approximately 2.58 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Dimov Dol Mine produced approximately 0.77 thousand tonnes of zinc in the year 2021. The Malko Turnovo Mine is owned by Bradtze, the Burgas Mine is owned by Burgaskii Mines Ltd. and the Dimov Dol Mine is owned by Rudmetal JSC.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., East Maritsa Coal Mine, Chelopech Mine, Malko Turnovo Mine, Burgas Mine, and Dimov Dol Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 6.67 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
